Every place here builds a little differently.
A 1960s brick ranch near the middle of Lubbock and a new home on the southwest edge need different things. A canyon lot in Ransom Canyon is nothing like a flat lot in Wolfforth. Smaller towns run their own permit offices. Each page below covers the homes, the conditions, and the kind of work that fits.
- LubbockLubbock has 1920s bungalows near Texas Tech and houses finished last year, and a plan that suits one won't suit the other.
- Southwest LubbockThe median house in this ZIP was built in 2000, so the bones are good and the builder finishes have run their course.
- WolfforthWolfforth grew by half in ten years, so there are a lot of new houses with unfinished yards.
- ShallowaterShallowater is a small town on US 84 with its own permit rules and new subdivisions going up next to the high school.
- Ransom CanyonThis is where the flat South Plains drops into a canyon. Slope, rim and lake change how every project is planned.
- IdalouA farm town of about 2,200 people, with houses that have been lived in for a long time and yards open to the wind.

Flat land, big wind, hard water, little rain.
The South Plains sit on the Llano Estacado, a high, very flat tableland. The soil is mostly loam and sandy loam, with a hard layer of caliche underneath. Rain is scarce, about 18 inches in an average year, and it tends to come in bursts.
Wind averages around 12 miles an hour across the year and runs higher in spring. Average first freeze comes near the end of October, and the last one in early to mid April. All of it shapes how we build, inside and out.
- 115 mphDesign wind speed in the City of Lubbock building code.
- 12 in.Frost line depth in the city code. Exterior footings go at least this deep.
- Zone 7bUSDA plant hardiness zone for the 79424 area.
- 2 daysAssigned lawn watering days per week under Lubbock's year-round schedule.
